The Han Dynasty (established in 207 B.C.) ushered in numerous advances for the Chinese people (and many ethnic Chinese still refer to themselves as the Han). Militarily, the Han spread the borders of China to Indochina and Korea and built large sections of the Great Wall. They invented paper, steel, water clocks, seismographs, sundials, new theories of astronomy and established the foundations of the Silk Road. Confucianism was standardized by Emperor Wu as the correct and official conduct for individuals and government bureaucrats and became the cornerstone of the educational curriculum. The Han gave the world many gifts, and we honor their memory.
