King Philip of Macedonia proclaimed to the Spartans: "You are advised to submit without further delay, for if I bring my army into your land, I will destroy your farms, slay your people, and raze your city." The Spartan ephors sent back a one word reply: "If." The Spartans are best known for their bravery, laconic wit, military prowess, and final stand at the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC. An allied Greek force spearheaded by 300 Spartan Peers stood and fought the army of Persian King Xerxes until killed to the last man. Their sacrifice rallied the remaining Greek forces to cripple Xerxes at the naval battle of Salamis and ultimately win a decisive land battle at Plataea. This effectively ended the Persian campaign in Greece and saved the cradle of western democracy. We honor their memory and sacrifice.
