The Birth of Noble Bar

I was sitting on my couch holding my newborn daughter. I was eating a bar that purported to be all natural, tasty and healthy. It was vegan. It was dried to 105 degrees so as not to destroy essential enzymes. It was good for the earth- and it was terrible. I chucked it across the room and decided I could make something better.

My wife raised a skeptical eyebrow after I told her my idea. After all, I have no experience in the food industry. No degrees conferred from Ivy League schools or years slaving as an intern for a Fortune 500 corporation. This is hardly a recipe for success.

I decided that I wanted to pair my interest in history with the production of an all natural bar. I wanted to make something that was totally unique- a bar based upon the foods eaten by some of history’s most noted civilizations. But how?

For a while, I was trying to create a workout program that focused on a diet and exercise plan used by the Romans and Spartans. But I just couldn’t make it work.

Then it hit me.

The Roman legionaries and Spartan Peers marched for several days without significant rest and fought incredibly brutal, hand to hand combat against their enemies. The Vikings braved frigid seas and unknown lands to stake their claim for their families and clans. The ancient Chinese soldier held the line of the Middle Kingdom against the barbarian. The Koreans repelled invader after invader of their homeland and the Japanese Samurai fought to the death for his liege lord. All of these civilizations had one thing in common- their efforts taxed them to the very limit of their physical being. To sustain their labors, they ate natural, healthy foods. No shots of scientifically formulated jell-goo…no super protein shakes. These men relied on dried fruits, nuts, and grains to fuel their victory. Why dried foods? That was the primary method of preservation and foods could remain edible on long campaigns or in hostile climates. Armed with this knowledge, I created Noble Bar.

A lot of people today desire to get back to those same roots. The entire organic movement is simply reaching back to the days before pesticides and hormone injected animals to obtain the purest, healthiest produce available.

People around the world are looking back to our ancestors and realizing that many did not suffer the debilitating effects of obesity and its related ills because they ate better food and less of it. I think most people would agree that we want to eat healthy food and we want it to taste good. And who wants to get fat in the process?

I had 3 primary goals in mind with Noble Bar.
1. Make a bar based upon the foods actually eaten by ancient civilizations; in other words, historically accurate.
2. Make sure it tastes good and is nutritionally balanced.
3. Honor and remember our ancient ancestors, their values and their contributions to our world today.

All of us are in some way, either genetically or culturally, related to the Romans, Greeks, Vikings, Chinese, Koreans and Japanese. Their way of life, inventions, governments and culture are sprinkled throughout our daily life. They lived the values of honor, courage, fidelity, loyalty and integrity- values that many people lack in our world today. Perseverance, hard physical work, and the meaning of freedom were traits they all understood. Unfortunately, though all recognized the word “freedom,” many were unable to truly live free. Our ancient forefathers also understood absolute tyranny and the misery it breeds. Many lived under the threat of having their homes and communities invaded by marauding armies and brigands. Fathers and mothers hoped and prayed that their crops would be bountiful and their children would grow into adulthood, free of death, slavery or oppression. Our ancestors faced these uncertainties and many incredible hardships with a smile, a steeled heart, a prayer or two, and hope that Fortune would smile upon them. For their suffering and their success, we honor their memory.

With all of those things in mind, I created Noble Bar.
